The VR simulation, developed by UHasselt, will be shown for the first time during Open Bedrijvendag on 6 October.

The new footpaths, designed by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, known for projects such as Reading Between The Lines in Borgloon, connect important parts of campus Limburg DC, such as the Health Campus and the Construction Campus. Besides their functional role, the paths are also designed with an eye to the natural environment, allowing users to enjoy the surrounding nature.

According to Tom Vandeput, deputy for economy and chairman of POM Limburg, nature restoration and biodiversity play a central role in the development of the campus. "These paths contribute to our ambition to preserve and strengthen existing nature," Vandeput said. "They increase mobility and make the campus more attractive for both visitors and users."

Pieterjan Gijs of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh concurs: "One of the main principles is to preserve the existing nature as much as possible and to remove as few trees as possible. The path is therefore given an irregular shape in several places and folded around the trees. The route and this irregular movement create a varied experience. For instance, you walk past a willow border on an open field, a pond and several 'forest rooms'. This winding elevated path brings the different users of the university campus into contact with the natural area in a new way. They are deliberately guided through special places, creating a kind of inertia and conscious experience of this wild area. Nature is staged through the route, the elevated path and the framed views."

3D design and VR technology
Besides the traditional 2D design, a 360-degree virtual view of the footpaths was also created. The terrain was mapped in detail using advanced technologies such as 360-degree photography. UHasselt's Expertise Centre for Digital Media experimented with this data to develop a photorealistic VR simulation. "Visitors can already take a virtual walk along the new paths with VR glasses and treadmill, even before they are physically laid out," says Tom Vandeput.

"Until now, VR headsets were mainly used to display static scenarios, such as 360-degree videos, or for less photorealistic content, such as 3D environments in VR games. However, thanks to recent developments, users and developers can now walk around freely in fully photorealistic environments. This technology, which is still developing, offers an affordable way to capture real scenes with commercial cameras and generate new, photorealistic images," say Nick Michiels and Lode Jorissen of EDM UHasselt.

Digital twin of Limburg DC
The VR experience is part of a wider project to digitise Limburg DC. Together with knowledge institutions from the campus, POM Limburg is working on developing a 'digital twin' of the campus, a digital copy that can be used to simulate future projects. Among other things, this will help to better map the impact on environment, resources and costs, or do simulations related to mobility. The ultimate goal is to make Limburg DC a 'smart campus'.

"Thanks to the digital twin, we can plan projects more accurately and better avoid unexpected costs or delays," says Tom Vandeput. "This leads to more efficient execution of future construction projects on campus."

Experienced contractor
The public contract for the construction of the footpaths was awarded to Wegenis- en Rioleringswerken De Dender, a contractor already experienced in similar complex projects, such as the island garden in the Meise Botanical Garden. The waiting period continues until 15 October. The works, which are expected to last a year, will be carried out with an eye for nature. The construction zone is strictly demarcated to minimise the impact on the surrounding area.

POM Limburg lanceert een Virtual Reality (VR)-ervaring waarmee bezoekers letterlijk kunnen wandelen over de toekomstige wandelpaden op Limburg DC, ontworpen door Gijs Van Vaerenbergh.
