After decades of neglect, the campus environment is once again turning green. Various interventions will strengthen biodiversity, expand walking possibilities and connect the various sub-campuses. The nature restoration works will start from 19 February.

The master plan of Limburg DC, directed by POM Limburg, emphasises restoring valuable nature and strengthening the link between the campus and its surroundings. In 2022, Natuurpunt and POM Limburg submitted a project proposal to the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests to improve the quality of the green campus environment. Thanks to a financial boost of 100,000 euros granted by Flemish Minister for the Environment Zuhal Demir, the nature restoration works can now finally start.

Neglect
"After 50 years of neglect, it is high time to breathe new life into the greenery on campus," says Jos Ramaekers, management coordinator of Natuurpunt Diepenbeek. "Specifically, this includes felling old poplars behind PXL University College, which will be replaced by native tree species such as oak and hornbeam. We are also tackling overgrown wood edges, taking care of pollard willows along the hay meadow and removing tree cover around the pond near the bus stop to reduce leaf fall and improve water quality. These initiatives are essential for restoring biodiversity and preserving the natural beauty of the campus."

Decking paths
Besides green works, infrastructure works are also planned, such as the construction of two decking paths, designed by the well-known architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. These paths will create smooth and safe pedestrian connections between the different campuses. "Currently, the campus buildings look fragmented. Opening up valuable nature will change this," said deputy for Economy and chairman of POM Limburg Tom Vandeput. "Campus residents will be able to move around safely via beautiful footpaths. The route of these paths has been carefully mapped out to preserve the valuable large trees."

Compensation
The rest of the infrastructure works will also start shortly. These include the construction of the gatehouse and the creation of a new slip road between the Health Campus and the Construction Campus to clear Agora Avenue of traffic. Jos Ramaekers: "Although these developments will inevitably cost some trees, the loss of green space will be amply compensated by plantings elsewhere on the campus and the improvement of the quality of the existing nature."

POM Limburg en Natuurpunt starten groenwerken DIEPENBEEK – Onder impuls van POM Limburg en Natuurpunt ondergaat de natuur op campus Limburg DC een opmerkelijke transformatie.
