{"id":1622,"date":"2023-09-06T11:41:04","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T09:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/limburgdc.be\/?p=1622"},"modified":"2025-05-30T10:04:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T08:04:50","slug":"gijs-van-vaerenbergh-designs-experience-path-for-campus-in-diepenbeek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/limburgdc.be\/en\/gijs-van-vaerenbergh-designs-experience-path-for-campus-in-diepenbeek\/","title":{"rendered":"Gijs Van Vaerenbergh designs experience path for campus in Diepenbeek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Commissioned by POM Limburg, the renowned architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, known for 'Reading Between The Lines' in Borgloon, designed a unique experience path for Limburg DC, the campus in Diepenbeek. The path crosses a fascinating piece of nature and connects the Health Campus with the Construction Campus, among others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, POM Limburg and various partners designed a master plan for the campus in Diepenbeek, which was named Limburg DC, with DC standing for Diepenbeek Campus. The campus will be a lively and green site based on the American model, where knowledge institutions, companies and other stakeholders meet. Limburg DC consists of three major parts: the education campus with UHasselt, PXL and UCLL, Health Campus Limburg DC and the Construction Campus. Currently, the different parts are surrounded by robust nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campus experience<\/strong><br \/>\n\"One of our objectives when drawing up the master plan was to restore valuable nature,\" says deputy for Economy and chairman of POM Limburg Tom Vandeput. \"First and foremost in the interest of increasing biodiversity, but certainly also the experience for residents and neighbours. A green environment, with walking paths and rest areas, makes campus life so much more pleasant.\" For that, POM Limburg appointed Halle-based study bureau D+A for an overall design of the campus landscaping, and Leuven architectural firm Gijs Van Vaerenbergh to add cachet to the footpaths. The entire development will be done in close consultation with Natuurpunt and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Island Garden<\/strong><br \/>\nGijs Van Vaerenbergh is a collaboration of two Belgian artist-architects, Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh. Especially known are <em>Reading Between The Lines <\/em>in Borgloon and <em>Labyrinth<\/em> at C-mine, both designs by them. \"But it was mainly the concept of the Eilandtuin in the botanical garden in Meise that appealed to us,\" says Tom Vandeput. \"The layout there perfectly matched the visual quality we envisaged for the campus. Nature in the plant garden is interwoven with the path in a special way, creating a total experience. We are taking a similar approach, cutting down as few trees as possible for the construction of the paths.\"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artworks<\/strong><br \/>\nThe architectural duo designed a concept for the two main walking connections of the campus. These routes connect the Construction Campus to the Health Campus and to the future Spartacus stop in the campus heart. They are thus functional and take visitors easily from one place to another. But the walkways are more than quick connecting paths; they are actually works of art in themselves. Arnout Van Vaerenbergh and Pieterjan Gijs: \"In the Eilandtuin in Meise, we were able to shape a new garden around the footpath. In this project, the logic is reversed and we start from the existing nature, which we want to preserve as much as possible and visualise as well as possible. The paths run through special natural areas that serve as buffers and flood plains in wet periods. The path therefore floats above the ground and is designed as an erratic, winding surface. The erratic shape maximises the integration of existing trees into the path and creates a great diversity of views, corners and spots. The path widens and narrows, creating space not only for walking but also for standing, sitting, examining, looking far away and discovering close by. In the small and large curves, there is always something new to discover under and next to the path. Special interventions transform the path and bring the different biotopes into focus. At the level of the pond, for instance, the path changes into a jetty and platforms and resting places are created in open spaces. Various small interventions such as openings for trees, stepping stones or seating elements further contribute to the special experience.\"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Line play<\/strong><br \/>\nThe walkways consist of steel 'ribs' filled with concrete. The so-called ribs create a winding interplay of lines between and around the trees. Tom Vandeput: \"Among other things, the path runs over water, along the pond and along the blue grassland. All hidden places where campus residents could not reach until today. So soon, visitors will not only be able to traverse the campus via a shorter route, but also enjoy untouched nature.\" This autumn, the environmental permit will be applied for and an executor appointed.
