Following an open call, which POM Limburg organised together with the Flemish Master Builder, architectural firm Studio Muoto from Paris came out on top in the selection process. The Health Campus gatehouse will be an impressive cylindrical tower with an open character.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Diepenbeek campus has been in transition for a while. The master plan that POM Limburg developed with various partners over the past few years is taking increasingly concrete shape. Besides the education campus, with UHasselt, PXL and UCLL, the Construction Campus and the Health Campus are the main building blocks. Gedeputeerde voor Economie en voorzitter van POM Limburg Tom Vandeput: \"The gateway is part of the Health Campus, but is mainly the face of the campus to the outside world. So it should be a literal reflection of the site's sky-high ambitions, and the winning design has definitely succeeded in that.\" Besides the gatehouse, the prominent parking building will also be a beacon for the entire campus. \"To give the site a cross-border feel, we call the campus Limburg DC, with DC standing for Diepenbeek Campus.\"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Palmares<\/strong><br \/>\nPOM Limburg and UHasselt went looking for an architectural firm together with the Flemish Master Builder over the past few months. Out of about 20 applications, the design by Paris-based Studio Muoto and Flemish Tab Architects emerged as the best from the selection procedure. Both firms have a good track record. For instance, established name Muoto designed the \"Lieu de Vie\", the first building on the new Paris university campus in Saclay; a task very similar to Limburg DC. The firm of Frenchman Gilles Delalex and Belgian Yves Moreau, they say, sees architecture as a beginning, not an end. Especially known are their minimalist structures, which can evolve over time and often combine different activities. 'Muoto' is therefore Finnish for 'form'. Furthermore, the architects are heavily involved in education and research. The second firm, Tab Architects from Ghent, is a young, promising collective involved in, among other things, the large-scale renovation of the Jewish Museum in Brussels. Rotterdam-based landscape firm RTD is also involved, and is responsible for the environmental design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campus feel<\/strong><br \/>\nRecognisability and identity were key criteria during the selection process. Tom Vandeput: \"We want to strengthen the campus feeling in Diepenbeek. The winning design radiates a clearly recognisable, new and strong identity. The inviting character of the cylindrical buildings ensures an open reception for visitors. Moreover, numerous meeting places are provided. These encounters encourage cooperation and cross-pollination between disciplines, which is not coincidentally the core of the campus.\" Furthermore, the main focus was on sustainability. \"The new buildings will be a paragon of sustainability: both energy-positive, change-oriented and water-neutral are being built.\"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Innovation centre for healthcare<\/strong><br \/>\nThe entire gateway consists of an ensemble of two large, round towers. Next to the effective gatehouse will be a parking building with some 500 spaces, as well as bicycle parking, small shops and a courtyard garden. The gatehouse itself will house an open innovation centre for healthcare, and shared facilities for campus residents, including offices, meeting rooms and a restaurant. Health Campus manager Roeland Buckinx: \"This gatehouse is an important step in our lofty ambitions. It will be a lighthouse location where companies, knowledge institutions and healthcare actors work together to improve our care, from innovative idea to implementation.\"<\/p>\n<p>UHasselt is already taking a central role in the open innovation centre for healthcare. Rector of UHasselt Bernard Vanheusden: \"In the gatehouse, we will further develop our research within our new master's programmes in healthcare. This place offers the opportunity to bring together people from very diverse disciplines and tackle the challenges in the care sector as efficiently as possible. As a civic university that wants to use its knowledge to make society smarter, more agile and better, we are especially looking forward to the many collaborations with the healthcare sector that will be made possible thanks to this gatehouse.\"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contractor<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the coming period, the design will be further refined together with the agencies. Tom Vandeput: \"With this award, we are choosing an experienced team and a strong concept. Over the next few months, that concept will be further polished in a design process. Early next year, we will bring a contractor on board who will work in a construction team with the architect to further optimise the design.
