The various sub-campuses will be connected by footpaths and the rest of the nature - including the pond - will be made publicly accessible again. All this is possible thanks to the support of Flemish Minister for the Environment Zuhal Demir.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Commissioner for Economy and chairman of POM Limburg Tom Vandeput: \"The valuable Dem landscape will be restored. This will greatly enhance the experience on campus.\"<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Campus Diepenbeek will be one of the most important intersections in Limburg, with space for education, research, business and recreation. The ambitious master plan - which looks towards 2050 - was developed in recent years with POM Limburg as director, and the first results are now becoming visible on the ground.<\/p>\n<p><em>Commissioner Tom Vandeput: \"One of our objectives when drawing up the master plan was to restore valuable nature. Primarily in the interest of increasing biodiversity, but certainly also in the interest of the experience for residents and neighbours. A green environment, with footpaths and picnic benches, makes campus life so much more pleasant.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nature in your neighbourhood<\/strong><br \/>\nTogether with Natuurpunt, POM Limburg submitted a dossier to Nature in your Neighbourhood, a project call by the Agency for Nature and Forests. Ecocampus Diepenbeek is one of the 23 approved nature development projects.<\/p>\n<p><em>Flemish Minister of Nature Zuhal Demir: \"Since the corona virus emerged, more and more Flemish people have discovered nature in their surroundings. As the name of the project call suggests, we also want to bring nature closer to people via small-scale interventions, not least in places where this is less obvious. Nature on the Diepenbeek campus could also use a refresh. That way, the bright minds studying in Limburg can find relaxation, rest, but also inspiration and motivation in greenery.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biodiversity<\/strong><br \/>\nNature on and around the campus had been somewhat out of focus in recent years. The ponds and pools are not accessible to the public, nor are they currently being maintained. This is a shame for biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chairman of Natuurpunt Bart Vangansbeke: \"With its location between the Kempen and Haspengouw regions, the possibilities for restoring top-class nature are still here. Thanks to this project we can finally start nature management of the green spaces. Via a joint management plan for the green spaces that are safeguarded in the master plan, we will subsequently make this management sustainable. Top nature for and with the Limburg top brains of the future is our goal.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Connection<\/strong><br \/>\nCurrently, campus buildings give a fragmented impression. Unlocking nature will change this.<\/p>\n<p><em>Deputy Tom Vandeput: \"Our master plan focuses on connection: the two sub-campuses - the Construction Campus and the Health Campus - and the heart of education must be optimally connected. Especially as far as the connection between the Construction Campus and the education buildings is concerned, this is currently a problem. By making nature accessible again, campus residents will be able to move around safely, via a car-free road. Along the way, we provide meeting places, which encourage community building. Between UHasselt and the Construction Campus, we will also erect a nature experience pavilion. That will be completely circularly built.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Smart signal area<\/strong><br \/>\nCampus Diepenbeek is located in a wetland area.
