Embuild Limburg and Limburg DC join forces for Bouwcampus 2.0
Construction Campus 2.0 is to become the pivotal hub for digital and circular innovation in the Limburg construction sector. To make that ambition a reality, Embuild Limburg and Limburg DC, as the university campus in Diepenbeek is now known, are entering into a strategic partnership. To this end, Chris Slaets and Marc Thonissen, director and chairman of Embuild Limburg, and Tom Vandeput and Noël Slangen, chairman and general director of POM Limburg who are signing on behalf of their campus developer Limburg DC, signed a cooperation agreement on 3 April. The agreement was officially ratified at the current Construction Campus, where work on the new infrastructure is now well underway.
Through this partnership, Embuild Limburg and Limburg DC commit to realising a circular, dynamic and modular building complex, including associated landscaping. The focus will be on a minimal ecological footprint, circular construction principles and efficient use of space by building vertically and making optimal use of existing paving. Together with the existing buildings, Bouwcampus 2.0 is to develop into an inspiring knowledge and meeting place where various stakeholders from the sector come together, also accommodating the UHasselt research lab that focuses on the accelerated testing and development of circular building materials and systems. In this way, Bouwcampus 2.0 will stimulate cross-pollination and give an extra boost to investments in circular and digital construction – much needed in a sector struggling with high waste volumes and low profitability.
The cooperation agreement fits seamlessly with the SALKturbo plan, a strategy to sustainably strengthen and accelerate the Limburg economy, supported by POM Limburg, the Province of Limburg and UHasselt. Through this strategic partnership, Limburg aims to position itself as a frontrunner in digital and circular construction and to increase the productivity and innovation capacity of the Limburg construction sector.
Tom Vandeput, Deputy for Economy and Chairman of POM Limburg: “The construction sector needs places where real testing and experimentation can take place. With this partnership between Embuild Limburg and Limburg DC, we are making that possible. Bouwcampus 2.0 will not be a traditional campus, but a living lab where we put innovative ideas into practice: modular building, smarter use of space, and working with a minimal ecological footprint. By bringing businesses, researchers, and educational institutions together here, we are strengthening the ecosystem of the construction sector in Limburg. In this way, we aim to further consolidate our position as a leading frontrunner in construction innovation in Flanders, while simultaneously giving shape to the new buildings on the Bouwcampus, which is currently very much under construction.”
Marc Thonissen, President of Embuild Limburg: “With this partnership, the construction and installation sector in Limburg is taking an important next step towards a future in which innovation, circularity and digitalisation take centre stage. Bouwcampus 2.0 offers a unique pilot environment where companies, researchers and educational institutions can jointly test new construction methods and apply them in practice. As a partner and prospective user of the modular and circular building complex, we are extremely proud to actively contribute to this ecosystem and thereby further strengthen the sector in our province.”
