POM Limburg launches order to build decking paths

Design Gijs Van Vaerenbergh comes to life

POM Limburg is starting the search for a contractor to build decking paths on the Diepenbeek campus. The unique experience paths were designed by renowned architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh on behalf of Limburg DC, POM Limburg's project developer for the campus. The paths run through a fascinating piece of nature and connect the Health Campus with the Construction Campus, among others.

In 2020, POM Limburg and several partners designed a master plan for the campus in Diepenbeek, which was named Limburg DC. The campus will be a lively, green site, where knowledge institutions, companies and other stakeholders meet. Limburg DC consists of three major parts: the Education Campus, Health Campus Limburg DC and the Construction Campus.

A modal shift is under way at Limburg DC: the car must give way to some extent to create a car-free heart. At the campus edges, parking buildings welcome motorists. Two footpaths were designed to connect the Construction Campus, Health Campus Limburg DC and the future Spartacus stop. These should also make nature accessible again. For this, the renowned architectural duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh was called in.

The decking paths float above ground level and take shape around and next to existing trees. The paths are executed in a whimsical contour with a material combination of concrete, corten steel or steel. Halle-based engineering firm D+A is responsible for the overall design of the landscaping on the campus.

Limburg DC is now launching a contract to build the footpaths. Because of the forest environment and the swampy ground, the assignment involves some complexity. The aim is to preserve nature as much as possible during the works.
